Species: WHITMOREITE Locality: Chickering Mine, Walpole, NH Specimen Size: 2.5 mm field of view. Onion habit whitmoreite. Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Catalog No.: u1657 Notes: This onion habit of whitmoreite is defined as "Type 4" in Whitmore and Lawrence's book The Pegmatite Mines Known as Palermo. |

Species: GADOLINITE Locality: N. Sugarloaf Mtn., Bethlehem, NH Specimen Size: 2 mm gadolinite crystal Field Collected: Tom Mortimer - May, 1989 Catalog No.: 644 Notes: This is a re-do of an earlier photo. Reference: "Pegmatite and Miarolitic Cavity Minerals of North Sugarloaf Mountain Bethlehem New Hampshire", Whittemore and Janules, Rocks & Minerals, Vol. 65, No. 4. "SEM EDS analysis .... showed compositions intermediate between gadolinite-(Y) and gadolinite-(Ce)" |

Species: BERTRANDITE Locality: New Hampshire Specimen Size: 6 mm field of view. Field Collected: B. Gilker - 1980's Catalog No.: u099 Notes: The Gilkers were an older couple that lived in Amherst, NH for many yeras. They were members of the Nashua Mineral Society to which I also belonged. When they moved away (1992), they invited me to their home to see if I wanted any of the material they were leaving behind. I saw little that I wanted, but did spot a feldspar chunk with many micro bertrandite crystals, (in the house roof drip-line area). Unfortunately, they did not recall where they had found it, but were quite certain that it was from one of their New Hampshire collecting trips. These are quite nice for NH bertrandites. A good example of the importance of recording where your specimens were collected. The granular material on the crystals is bonded to the bertrandite. There appears to be some green mineral included in this, perhaps epidote. |

Species: BERTRANDITE Locality: Beauregard Mine, Alstead, NH Specimen Size: 1.5 mm field of view. Horizontally oriented clear bertrandite prisms. Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Catalog No.: u1444 Notes: At the Beauregard Mine bertrandite is found in highly altered beryl crystals. Big crystal collectors usually reject these. Often these crude, brown-tan crystals have to be broken open to expose the micro bertrandite. |

Species: APATITE-(CaOH) Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 6 mm field of view. Field Collected: Walter Lane material - a MMNE give-away Catalog No.: u1598 Notes: My visual ID for these balls was crandallite. The Microvision EDS analyses indicated just a simple calcium phosphate, apatite. A fluorine response (@ 677 eV, above the 525 eV oxygen peak) is totally absent in the EDS spectrum, indicating these balls are hydroxylapatite. Tabular apatite crystals are also present in this view. |

Species: SOUZALITE Locality: Charles Davis Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 4 mm field of view Field Collected: Bob Wilken Catalog No.: u910 Notes: I am labeling the greenish crystal laths as souzalite of the gormanite-souzalite, pending EDS analysis. At Charles Davis, the greenish crystals of the scorzalite-lazulite series have been analyzed to be Mg>Fe, so lazulite. So am taking a "leap of faith" that these greenish crystals of the gormanite-souzalite series are also Mg dominant, so souzalite. From a stack of 104 images processed with Helicon Focus, Method C. |

Species: GORMANITE-SOUZALITE Locality: Charles Davis Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 2.5 mm crystal cluster Field Collected: Inga Burggraf Catalog No.: u1193 Notes: A re-do of a 2015 photo of this specimen. From a stack of 127 images processed with Helicon Focus, Method C. Specimen acquired at the 2011 MMNE symposium for $2.00. |
